Martha Ferguson is a fine artist, painter, and sculptor based in Portland, Maine, where she is a member of the Running With Scissors art community. Her work addresses environmental issues and explores her relationship with the natural world. Skilled in painting, sculpture, and printmaking, she selects media based on the concept behind each piece.
Her solo exhibition Nets, Lines, and Other Entanglements called attention to environmental concerns and the interconnected forces of nature. The show featured sculptural installations made with kelp and hand-tied fishing nets, referencing traditional nautical rope-tying techniques.
Ferguson also paints abstract landscapes inspired by favorite places and the quiet beauty of nature. Her process is intuitive—an ongoing practice of looking, interpreting, and responding to what she sees. Memory, emotional connection, and the passage of time are central themes in her work.
She has exhibited in Portland, Maine at Cove Street Arts and the Maine Art Collective, with solo shows at the Merrymeeting Arts Center (Bowdoinham, ME), the Adler Gallery (Port Washington, NY), and Berkeley College (New York City). Her work has appeared in numerous group exhibitions, including the Deering Art Exhibit at the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry in Augusta, ME. Her paintings are held in private collections and in the permanent collection of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centers in New York and New Jersey.
She is currently working on a series of oil paintings titled Endless Horizons, inspired by sailing trips in Penobscot Bay, Maine.
