Truro Paintings

While in residence on Cape Cod I took daily walks along the National Seashore in Truro to explore the magnificent dunes and beaches. I felt like a scientist researching and gathering information about this awe inspiring place. In my sketchbook I drew my observations of the landscape, weather, light, and activity on the beach and in the wetlands. Back in the studio, my collection of shells, seaweed, rocks and marine artifacts became a resource for my artwork.

These paintings are about water, or rather the absence of water. They don’t depict water directly; instead they portray the effects of water. I feel that in the absence of a thing we become more keenly aware of its presence. Water is our life force and source of our energy. As a wave recedes from the shore we have a brief moment of loss. I become most aware of the ocean’s energy when I follow the tracks a wave has made in the wet sand as it retreats out to sea.

My time spent immersed in nature at the Cape Cod National Seashore in Truro, Massachusetts instilled an awareness of environmental issues effecting our oceans and our responsibility to protect this vital resource.
